Special guest speaker on Wednesday- Kelly Gillis from UPEI will be talking about an exciting history project we can be a part of.

Science Test on Thursday- last science test of the year. We’ll be studying health next.

New book report books need to be chosen by Wednesday- a classic story.

Hannah McGonnell participates in the Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday at UPEI. We are so proud of you, Hannah!

Skating on Friday at the Simmons Arena. Be sure to pick up your child there at 2:30 on Friday.

It’s Love of Reading Week- here at GCS. Mrs. H, our librarian, has some fun days planned to celebrate reading: February 14th- Dress Up Day- dress up like your favourite book character. February 15th- Book cover contest- create a poster of your favourite book cover.

Tuesday- Valentine’s Day party at the CARI Pool complex- send in some goodies with your child.

Wednesday- Animal Poster Presentations

Friday- Skiing at Brookvale.

Be sure to keeping working on your Heritage Fair project. Remember our school fair will be held on March 12th.

February is a busy month.

Here are some important dates to remember…..

February 8th- Report cards go home.

February 9th-10th- Parent Teacher Conferences.. sign up sheets are available at the school entrance.

February 14th- Valentine’s Day party at the CARI pool complex. Permission slips will go home on Monday.

February 15th- Animal Poster projects are due.

February 17th- Skiing at Brookvale.

February 20th- No school- Islander Day

February 24th- Skating at the Simmons Arena

Be sure to check your child’s agenda for permission slips and notes that will be coming home. A schedule of weekly tests and quizzes can also be found in the agenda.

No school on Wednesday, February 1st- PD Day for teachers.

Great job on your oral book reports and dioramas, Grade 5.

Grade 6 – Titus book reports are due on Monday, February 6th. You will be working on them on class on Thursday and Friday.

Miss Grant has assigned an Animal Poster presentation. Presentations will be made in science class on Wednesday, February 15th. Posters should include at least 5 pictures of the animal, facts about the animal, habitat, prey, and a map showing where it lives.

Please be sure your child’s homework is done each night. Students will have spelling to study every night and any incomplete math from the day is for homework.

Grade 6- Library Research Reports are due on Monday!!!

Grade 5- Oral book reports and dioramas will be presented in class on Friday.

Heritage Fair topics need to be chosen by Friday. The students may choose to do this project with partners or by themselves.

Scholastic Book Orders are due on Friday.

Your child’s agenda has the weekly schedule of tests, quizzes, and homework. Be sure to check it daily.

Congratulations to the winner of our annual school Spelling Bee- Hannah McGonnell. Hannah and Devin spelled words in over 40 rounds until the winner was decided. She will be representing our school at the regional Bee at UPEI in February. Well done to all the Spelling Bee participants.

Planet Poster Presentations are due on Wednesday. Be sure you’re ready.

Grade 6- Library Research Report is due on the 23rd of January.

Grade 5- Keep reading your book report book- diorama and report will be due next week.

The weekly schedule of tests and quizzes can be found in your child’s agenda- be sure to check and ensure that all homework is completed each night.

Information will be going home this week about the school Heritage Fair. Topics will need to be chosen soon. The fair takes place on Monday, March 12th.

We are so pleased to have Miss Samara Grant in our class for the next several weeks. Miss Grant is a student teacher from Kingswood University in New Brunswick. She will be taking over and teaching all the classes during her time with us.

Grade 6- your first rough copy of your library research report is due on Monday.

PEI Scrapbook page is due on Tuesday.

Our annual school Spelling Bee will be held on Friday at 1:15. All are welcome to come and watch our great spellers.

Music News

The Grade Five and Six classes will be beginning recorder this week. Each student will be assigned a school recorder for them to keep for the rest of the year. If your child wishes me to purchase one on their behalf (approx. $6.50), I will be making a purchase at the end of this week. I’m able to buy them at a discount through the school. Please email me at adevries@gracechristianschool.ca. Otherwise they are welcome to borrow them. For those students who are new to recorder, we will be reviewing what we learned last year and picking up from there. There may also be an opportunity for some students to begin alto recorder if they are keen to do so.

Those students who have copies of their recorders or books from last year at home are asked to bring them to class for Friday, January 6^th.

Also, membership in the Knight Lights Percussion Ensemble is open until Jan. 31^st. New members are welcome! We are going to be working on music for the music festival and preparing a piece for a national competition hosted by Long and McQuade. Exciting!

Welcome back to school, class!!! Hope everyone had a great Christmas break.

Remember to have your interview ready to share with the class on Monday.

Wonderful job on the Christmas program, grade 5/6!!!! Thank you for all your help during the program with the kindergarten class.

Students can wear PJ’s to school on Monday and bring their favourite Christmas teddy. We will be having our Christmas Eve chapel in the morning. They can bring a board or card game for some fun in the afternoon.

Tuesday is Christmas party day- it’s a half day of school. School is dismissed at noon. Please send in some Christmas baking or other munchies for the party.

Have a wonderful Christmas!!! We start back to school on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012.
